No, Daddy.
How should a little girl sit?
Shoulders back and tummy in.
And how should a little girl look?
Always neat and pretty
That’s my girl.

Twenty-four-year-old Alexa Kennedy is beautiful, sharp as a whip, and at the top of her medical school class. She’s also been waging a war in her head for as long as she can remember. Depression. ★★★★! Keeping Secrets (stand-alone). An unlikely friendship between a med student & hedge fund manager blossoms into romance before being clouded by secrets!

Keeping Secrets (stand-alone) is a beautiful story, a mixture of suspenseful romance and erotic tale with a touching and enlightening plot on the topic of mental illness, what exactly to unfold with story. From onset it is clear that both med student Alexa Kennedy, Stats and hedge fund manager Dex Blakewell are keeping secrets.

They meet under less conventional circumstances when Alexa comes crashing into Dex’s carefully organized life while in route to see a dying patient. When their paths cross again a friendship develops that blossoms into a romance But their future is clouded by the secrets they both guard, Add to that that someone set on ruining Alexa’s chances of graduating Valedictorian.

Seven words to describe Dex Blakewell: Charming, chivalrous, loyal, nurturing, secretive, successful and determined.

Seven words to describe Alexa Kennedy, Stats: Conflicted, strong, smart, naïve, secretive, detailed, broken and resilient.

Keeping Secrets, told from dual POVs, is emotional sometimes dark even hopeless at times. In true Lisa Eugene fashion this is a medical romantic suspense that touches on a serious topic and the stigma attached to it. Epilogue some twelve years into the future is perfection through and through!

Thought provoking, emotional and intriguing plot! Heart-melting hero!

"So many secrets. Mine. Yours. We try to protect ourselves from the very people who only want to save us.”

What a great story! It was sweet, emotional, intense and hot!! I had so many feelings while I was reading this book.. there were moments where I was laughing and others that I was ready to cry. The characters are so lovable and realistic and the story touches some serious issues.

Alexa is a medical student who when she is on her way to the hospital has a car accident involving a man she thinks is a jerk. Due to an emergency she must go but still they must meet again because of the car accident. Soon these two will meet again and they become friends... But this isn't enough because the chemistry between them is so intense that they cannot deny that they feel more than being only friends..

description

Alexa is vulnerable, smart, sweet and funny. While you read more you learn about her childhood. Dex has his own problems to deal with.He is funny, super hot and protective. The characters are not perfect, they have issues and they find in each other what they need to heel.I loved their connection starting first as friends!

The need I had for her was consuming, irrational. She was as necessary as my next breath, as vital. It was not only baffling, but somehow unsettling.

I've been a fan of Lisa Eugene's since my first book of hers, Steal My Heart. And with each new book she's released since then she shows immense growth as an author. Her romances are not ordinary, and I can appreciate that as a reader. Reading romance, after a while most books begin to blend into each other. Unless there's a certain edge to them that makes them stick out. This book had that in spades. Lisa took on an incredibly raw topic and she managed to weave it flawlessly inside a romance. Now considering the subject matter here, that's no small feat. And props to her for pulling it off as well as she did.
Our gazes held and locked. There was a storm in her eyes and the force of it ripped through me.

Alexa Kennedy is a final year medical students, well on her way to becoming a doctor. She's motivated, driven, smart, and completely lost to the war inside her mind. She's her own worst critic and she never fails to rip into herself. A highly competitive medical school with entitled students just looking to overthrow her potential position as a valedictorian and scholarship to the Medical student are just a few of the things messing with her head. Then a child in the oncology wing that she's bonded with passes away and sends her into a tail spin

...only to come crashing into Dex Blakewell.

Dex is a successful businessman with no interest in women beyond one sweaty night between the sheets. But his word quite literary tilts on it's axis when he meets Alexa. What begins as an unlikely friendship soon begins to turn into something much more. But both of them are keeping secrets. Secrets that have the potential of breaking the connection that they only just now formed.,,

Keeping Secrets was very different from anything that I would typically read. While the romance is a heavy element, what truly drives the story is Alexa's "condition". Lisa spares no detail in her struggle and truly brings the reader inside her mind. I loved that gritty little element to this book. I'm not entirely sure why it's labeled as a dark romance, as I found nothing truly dark about it. There's no graphic violence but you do get a graphic view inside Alexa's issues . But for me that's not dark. Realistic, absolutely. But not dark.

Alexa is a very broken individual, and while not my usual preference to read in a heroine, there was also something very endearing to her. You can't help but feel for her and Lisa does a phenomenal job with character development to ensure that all readers will feel the same.

If you're looking to step a little bit outside the norm of contemporary romance, this is the book you do it with. I absolutely loved that the author didn't gloss over any issues. Her characters truly dealt with their issues in a realistic matter. The romance wasn't instantaneous but it wasn't too slow either. It was a perfect fit for the story and I loved watching these two fall in love. Of course in usual Miss Eugene fashion you get some super sexy scenes in here, but that's just the icing on the already great story cake.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
- Lao Tzu

There's a few things I can always count on with a book written by Lisa Eugene .

One, original plot. Her stories never seem to fit those cookie-cutter Contemporary Romance tropes we see day after day.

Two, she always incorporates something medical within her plotlines. More times than not, the H/h suffers from a certain condition - be it medical or mental impairments. Probably my favorite book written by her is Grayson which depicts a hero suffering from schizophrenia. I freaking LOVED that book. In using medical plotlines, I'm amazed she always seems to get it right in every way possible- medication, daily hospital grind, whatever. And being in the medical field myself, it's imperative to the success or failure of a book for me that author gets that stuff right.

Three, she incorporates a fairly complex journey of such, usually with a fair amount of emotional angst that isn't resolved with a snap of the fingers. It's realistic. I thrive on that in my books- realism and gut-wrenching attachment to the characters and their story. You know, that feeling deep within your gut where you put yourself inside the story and your heart bleeds right alongside them.

So...without further ado.

Keeping Secrets , once again, didn't fail in giving me those elements I search for in an enjoyable read. The heroine is Alexa and she's a very driven fourth-year medical student. She's on her last year and she'll officially be an MD. When I say driven, it's to a fault. When getting second-highest grade on a practicum is a semblance of failure- it's that kind of driven. When a sudden phone call from the hospital alerts her to a critical (favorite) pediatric cancer patient, she finds herself flying through the streets to get to him in time. She did not bank on wrapping her car around a fancy sports car- and the driver being a very livid (albeit hot as hell) man. And so their story begins...

Dex
is a successful financial advisor when he meets Alexa and pretty much his only goal is getting his priceless car fixed. But her practically fleeing the scene in pursuit of a sick patient leaves him to search for her. He didn't anticipate their bad first impression to turn into a fantastic friends-to-lovers story.

Keeping Secrets
has all the elements of a friends-to-lovers trope but couple that with an emotional journey that would test the strongest of loves. Alexa and Dex had it all but Alexa was hiding a medical condition that risks not only their future together but her life. So here's the love/hate I have with this story. I was so angry with Alexa for lying to Dex over and over about her condition, yet the author, I believe, was being true to not only her character but the condition she truly has. My guess is 99% of people suffering from it lie to loved ones habitually. I'll spoiler tag her condition as it could possibly be a trigger for some readers.

 photo E1A21A05-A5CB-4C72-A914-BC59284AED88_zps4vwcdszn.jpg

I loved loved loved Dex in this book. He was so supportive of Alexa when I think most men would've run for the hills. When I'd first experienced Alexa's battle, I had a hard time with her yet when push came to shove and life stresses caused her condition to become life threatening, my heart broke for her. In fact, I cried. I'm not a crier in books but it's so so clear this author has some personal or professional knowledge of this battle. Because of that, of the clarity of everything, it left me truly raw inside. Yet everyone deserves a Dex. That man was a saint and he was the balm to my Alexa's heart.

 photo ABE015CF-4F1D-45F5-B3C8-22253528EEED_zpspwohei2n.jpg

Keeping Secrets
was an all-around full circle love story of two people who meet under the worst circumstances, both having secrets they're hiding, yet their love and commitment to each other shines through. It was a tearful, trying journey but, rest assured, Lisa Eugene gives us a heartwarming happily-ever-after. I loved the epilogue.

***Clarification- I'd been told this was a dark erotic romance. I kept waiting and waiting for it. Apparently that's in the eye of the beholder. There's nothing necessarily dark or graphic in this book. The subject matter related to her condition can be a bit raw, however, NOT dark by today's standards. There is zero actual violence yet the circumstances of how she was raised by a very controlling ruthless father (see quote in blurb) may bother hearts-and-flowers seeking romance readers. Feel free to message me for questions as I don't want to spoil plot.

* * * * Spoiler Free- An 2015 Review
When I open a Lisa Eugene book, I know a number of things. I know I am going to take on a journey through someone’s life that will ring true. It will be steeped in reality; meaning I will be touched deeply. For the characters will be complex and will be needing to confront some of life’s most difficult challenges while being knee-deep in climbing a demanding career path.

This book has been difficult for me to review for it hits so many important issues head-on.

There is no mandatory license or required training to have a child. It is a crap-shoot as to who your parents are...and if we are lucky, they are loving, caring people who know not to harm these little minds while in their care.
Unfortunately, not all parents instill a strong sense of self; a feeling of security within the family unit. Instead, we have read time and time again of all the physical and mental abuse that happens every day and the next question I ask is how much of this type of abuse can trigger mental breaks... where the mind is not left to develop in its own way but twisted by the words and actions of others...

This brings me to Mental Illness and the shaming of it. Mental illness is just like any other illness.
However, society does not treat those with it the same. There is so much fear surrounding the unknown, it causes society to historically react as if the person afflicted was at fault. As if it was a matter of "mind over matter" or the person was weak and had no willpower.

Would we say the same to people who get Cancer... is it their fault and they should just work harder to get better...Many types of mental illness can be treated, especially if caught early. Coping mechanisms can be taught...new medications have been discovered to handle things like crippling depression, etc. Signs shown early on in children should be taken seriously and visits to the appropriate doctors should happen. We take our children to the doctor when they have terrible earaches.... why not when their minds are forcing them to pull away and lead them to darkness?

Lisa Eugene takes a woman with a brilliant mind capable of being at the top of her class in medical school and combines it with patterns of coping which are physically threatening to her well-being. It is a coping tool that makes the person feel as if they are in control when they have none. The added pressure is to keep all of these behaviors secret which then feeds on her mental state.

This is a love story of two people who end up being exactly who they need to be for each other. Both have secrets that are painful. Both are strong for the other... but need help in being real with their own demons. This plot is told well with the signature bonus of intrigue. Everything is not what it seems.

I will also add, the way this story ended worked extremely well for there was no knee-jerk HEA. Things took time. People needed this time to heal and become complete. It is only when we are complete that we can then share all of ourselves.

I have posted Allison's review below.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
She was able to say absolutely everything I wanted to say...did it intelligently and so well.
I do advise those who have abuse/food triggers, this book may not be for you.

Overall Opinion: This is a hard book to review. I felt like it was well written, and it addresses the big issue of people with mental illnesses being stigmatized. Did I like the characters? Yes. Did I feel like I was rooting for their relationship to succeed? Yes. Is this a book that I'll read again? No. I also don't think this would be the book for everyone. Don't get me wrong -- there are some light moments that made me smile and swoon at times, so it's not All sad...but it is covering some tough subjects. The times that the h and H interacted, and just their overall relationship (best friends first before lovers type that can spend every waking minute together and enjoy it) dynamic is what made it a 4 star rating for me.

Brief Storyline: This is Alexa and Dex's story. They meet when Alexa crashes her Dad's car into Dex. After Dex tracks her down to get her information, they end up building a fast friendship. They spend more and more time together whenever they can, and end up changing their relationship and falling in love. Alexa is struggling with medical school among other things , and is keeping some big secrets from Dex. They have some hard times, but do get their HEA.

POV: This alternated between Alexa and Dex's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. It was heavy so I personally slowed down a little, but I wouldn't say the the writing caused that -- it flowed well.

Instalove: No

H rating: 4.5 stars. Dex. Almost perfect. He only had a few moments that I wanted to shake him, but he more than made up for them and acknowledged his own mistakes (which is sometimes rare with our alphas). I loved how devoted he was to Alexa, and how he changed throughout the book because he had found his other half.

h rating: 4 stars. Alexa. Poor Alexa. She sure had a hard upbringing. She had some really crappy parents that ended up doing more harm than good with her. She has struggled through her life, but we get some hope for her with the end and the epilogue.

Sadness level: Moderate/high. I cried some with this book. It does cover some hard issues that make it emotional.

Heat level: The couple have great chemistry and have some steamy times.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: Not really

Sex scene with OW or OM: Yes

Cheating: No

Possible Triggers:

Closure: Thank goodness for the light and happy epilogue! It gave us some good closure and the couple got their well deserved HEA.

Worth the $?: I paid $3.99 on Amazon, and I'd say it was worth it.

KEEPING SECRETS
The kind of love that saves you from yourself...
KEEPING SECRETS is an erotic contemporary romance that is unlike anything you've ever read. It is a book that will touch your heart and move your soul.
More than anything, though, this is not just a sexy, contemporary romance, I hope to give you a glimpse into the life of someone who suffers from chronic depression, who is tormented by her distorted image of her body, and who has an eating disorder.
Mental illness touches all of our lives in one way or another. I believe there should be more tolerance and understanding towards these disorders that affect so many, and I hope to help increase awareness and decrease the stigma that prevents so many from getting help.
This love story represents hope, shows the resiliance of the human spirit and our never-ending fight to survive despite the obstacles--internal and external. Alexa finds strength not just in Dex's incredible, unwavering love, but through him, she finds power in herself.

1.5 ⭐️ I was expecting to be blown away by this book based on the multitude of glowing 4 and 5 star reviews, but after finishing it I truly don’t understand all the praise. The book was, at best, just okay. The writing is not great and there’s very little flow. Time passes from one paragraph to the next and scenes change with no break. I didn’t feel a connection between the main characters and a lot of the dialogue is cheesy and awkward.

The premise had potential but I felt like the snippets of Alexa’s past were a bit misleading or maybe underdeveloped? Chapters begin with past conversations between Alexa and her dad: “you must face the pain, Alexa.” “Yes, daddy.” “Good girl. Now, take off your clothes…”

Based on this, I assumed Alexa’s father had severely abused her (definitely emotionally, most likely physically, and even sexually) as a child. However, the present day interactions between Alexa and her father in the book would lead you to believe he’s nothing more than a strict father with high standards. It all felt very strange.

Finally, I recognize that this book is called Keeping SECRETS but I was furious that Dex called Alexa a liar for downplaying the seriousness of her eating disorder. He aggressively confronts her about her behavior after a traumatic event at school and threatens to leave her. She was embarrassed and panicking. It wasn’t exactly a situation where honesty would have been welcomed or even well received. I doubt anyone in her situation would have been able to open up about their mental health struggles. The worst part was Dex accusing her of keeping secrets when he hasn’t been the least bit honest with Alexa about a pretty significant event in his life.

There’s no telling when or where true love might strike without warning. And the timing may be off-kilter when it happens. Inner demons don’t schedule their visits around falling in love. Even when love can’t heal every wound or scare off the demons that live within, love somehow bears it all continuing to shower comfort, support and forgiveness that allows it to survive. Lisa Gene has written a story that is filled with gut-wrenching emotions amid the power and beauty of second chances.

There is a thread of suspense embedded throughout the storyline as well. Both the suspense and romance are well written and keep the reader engaged and tense waiting to see what happens next. Our protagonists share an intense chemistry and sizzling passion – even through the most difficult of times when trust is tested to its limits.

Lisa Gene is a new-to-me-author, and I found my first experience to be a very positive one.

5 *****STARS all the way! WOW. WOW.

When I finished this book, I just had to sit back and say "Wow". OMG, I don't think I've ever been through such a wide range of emotions in one read. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and there were times I was filled with pure joy.
Alexa Kennedy is a medical student, a perfectionist who must be the best at everything she does. She hides behind big glasses and oversized sweaters, keeping the world away. Her singular goal is to be class valedictorian which will get her the internship she desperately wants at the Mayo Clinic. Although Alexa is brilliant, she suffers mentally. She hates her body, is clinically depressed, and binge eats and purges when she's under stress.

During the book, we find out more and more about her childhood and her domineering, asshole father. There're things in her childhood that affects who she is today.

In comes Dex, gorgeous, funny, a man who's got his own demons and in no way looking for a relationship. But these two empty souls find a way to fill up on each other. Their friendship becomes a source of laughter, and strength, and gentle companionship. The magic that happens between them is extraordinary and it's amazing to see it blossom. Lisa Eugene does a beautiful job in pulling us into this relationship and making us fall in love with these two very broken people. We root for them, see the signs of them falling in love even when they don't, and when it finally happens, it's f*ing amazing. The sex between them is so hot that I needed a fan. The emotion written into those scenes makes it even hotter.

But Alexa is dealing with a lot of stress at school and because of her issues with her distorted body image and her baseline mental instability, she's starts to crumble from the pressure of trying to keep it all together while hiding her secrets from Dex. This book at times had me on the edge of my seat, sneaking into the bathroom at work so I could see what would happen next. The book makes an impact and there're some scenes that are very emotional, but depict the harsh reality of Alexa's bulimia, depression, and anxiety disorder. This is an epic tale, an amazing story of the power of love and healing. I thank Ms. Eugene for writing such a books that addresses these real life issues and in such a way that will tear you down and then build you up, that will give courage and hope. I thoroughly loved this read and this is a book I would recommend over and over again.

description

4.5 Horniness & rhythm stars.

Alexa Kennedy was an A1 medical student, top of her class and a tad nerdy by most standards. She was heading towards gaining class valedictorian, which would ensure her an internship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic.
“My life was devoted to medicine, to hard work and a single minded goal.”

A minor accident in her father’s borrowed pride and joy, has major implications on her future. She had hurtled into the obnoxious, highly irritated Dex Blakewell, and his initial reaction at the scene, and reluctance to let Alex go, was the turning point for both of them.

Dex Blakewell was the head of his own enterprise, and wasn’t short of money, cars or lamp-light entertainment. He kept things very casual, and was certainly not in the market for a relationship. But on meeting Alexa, he was enamoured. He wanted to know her better, he wanted to spend time with her. Her hyper-intelligence was magnetic, and he had never enjoyed such enigmatic company.

The two became firm friends very quickly, slipping seamlessly into love. But both were battling demons, and the closer they got, the more their demons wanted to come out to play.
”So many secrets. Mine. Yours. We try to protect ourselves from the very people who want to save us.”

This became a very emotional read for me. I was captured by the medical slant, always a sucker for a rescued heartbeat, and a likeable, tortured h generated just the right mix.

Dex wanted to be Alex’s saviour, and his patience, alongside his desperation, was admirable. I absorbed Dex completely.
”Dex. My best friend. My passion. My heart.

A superbly, tormented, but powerful story..

Probably ranks right up there with one of the best books I've read this year! So amazingly heartfelt! This one really got to me emotionally. I found myself tearing up quite a few times. I need sometime to reflect on this one, however, before I write my review. I will say this, though, the writing was stellar! I high-lighted so many passages on my iPad, and I re-read so many paragraphs. That's how I knew the writing just captured my attention completely. This is one that did not disappoint. I loved it!

I paid $3.99 for this book. It was not offered in KU. I liked the premise and read the sample and thought I would take a chance and buy the book. I have regrets. The beginning was promising. I loved the banter. However, by 50% I lost my connection with the characters. I felt bad for what Alexa had to deal with every single day. The abuse she suffered as an adult was heartbreaking, but the writing fell flat. The story would go from one scene to the next without a break. There was no flow. I am not sure why there are so many 4-5 star reviews for this book. The writing was mediocre. The book was not cheap so would expect that the writer would have hired a professional editor to edit.

Another issue I had with the story with Dex, the hero. Dex talked about "crazy women" throughout the book. Then he talked about how he hated being lied to, but he was the one that did not tell Alexa "Stats" that he was a widower. I have no idea why this was a secret.

“I once asked you to trust me, to trust the honesty of my words and my actions. I’m asking you to do that now. To believe in me. In us.” (Loc 79%) What a bunch of lies from the hero.

Dex was married to his wife six months before she found out she had cancer. His dead wife did not tell him about the cancer until it was too late. I guess he felt that she betrayed him by not telling him so he felt that lying was a big no-no even though he was as much of a liar as Alexa. STILL why did he keep his previous marriage a secret?!?!?! I thought his BIG secret would be HUGE. It was a let down. Dex told Alexa about his dead wife at 91%.

There was some mystery in this book. Equipment was stolen and Alexa is accused of stealing and threatening another medical student.

I've been looking forward to "Keeping Secrets" by Lisa Eugene after reading and loving her book "Grayson."

Similarly, "Keeping Secrets" takes on a serious topic and incorporates it into a beautiful and sweet love story. A story about a love that conquers it all, that doesn't change and that is willing to fight through the hardships a mental illness poses.
The kind of love that makes our soul sigh and our heart tremble in awe. That's the love that Alexa and Dex share.

But it doesn't start out like that. Oh no. When they meet, they share a mutual dislike for each other. That irritation quickly turns into friendship - something neither of them expected or were looking for. Soon, a friendship isn't enough as they can't deny their attraction much longer.
What started out as a complete mess has morphed into a loving and caring relationship, with respect, passion and fun to boot.

But both, Alexa and Dex, are keeping secrets - secrets that influence their actions and emotions. And Alexa's secrets are the ones that can destroy not only the bond her and Dex share but potentially threaten Alexa's life.

Alexa is a perfectionist, always striving for success and beating herself up when she doesn't achieve the best results. She doesn't know anything else. It's only when Dex enters her life, that she actually starts living.
But there is a part of her nobody knows about. A part that's making her life a living hell, forcing her to hate herself every waking minute. A part that puts her on a path of self-destruction and it's only a matter of time before it wears her down.
It's a balancing act between hiding her secrets and trying to let someone in. But no matter how much she loves Dex, this is a side of herself she can't show.
When things in her life start crumbling to pieces, the choice is not hers to make anymore as her secrets come to light.
Now it's up to Dex to decide if his love is strong enough to weather the storm and accept all of who Alexa is.
My heart broke for her - with every chapter a little more.

The way Lisa Eugene wrote this, wrote Alexa's pain, it was actually palpable. Alexa's despair so vivid, it actually felt uncomfortable and suffocating just reading about it.
The mental health issues that Alexa deals with were described with knowledge, respect and tact, making "Keeping Secrets" a book that can help people understand what someone with Alexa's issues is going through.

But my heard didn't just break for Alexa. Dex' pain wasn't something easily ignored either.
He's a rich, successful CEO. A man not easily fooled. He's sexy, hot and smart. But even more importantly, he's a man with a beautiful soul - a soul that's been crushed to pieces on more than one occasion. So he's hesitant to trust and let anyone in, yet he has no chance to fight his feelings for Alexa.
But when he finds out she's been keeping secrets and lying to him, the fears of his past catch up to him quickly and make it hard for him to see straight.
Once burned, twice shy - and he hasn't just been burned, but scorched.
Yet, and this is what I loved about him, he finds a way to put his anger aside and let the feelings of love win.
He seriously steps up to the plate and his love, support but also his stern attitude when necessary are what help Alexa find her inner strength - to stand up for herself and to heal.

The story was beautiful and the sex scenes were at their basic level hot. But - and this is the reason that I can't give the whole five stars - some words were a no-go. I know that this is a personal preference, but it kills a sex scene instantly when I read words like moist, channel, creamy slit, swollen glands or moist petals. No, just no. It made me cringe. And it made all the erotic mood the scenes held disappear.

4 it-would-have-been-more-if-not-for-the-petals stars.

This is a book DEDICATED to those people in the world who live with mental illness, and to me that is AWESOME!

Alexa is a doctor, well, a fourth year medical student working on the pediatric oncology floor. To say her life is stressful is an understatement. Not only is having to work her tail off wearing on her, but she is also still taking classes. The other students in her class are cutthroat and willing to do anything to bump her out of the valedictorian spot.

Dex, a rich man, workaholic and not looking to fall in love again. He is not afraid to use his money or his power to get things done fast, and most importantly…his way.

When a car accident throws them together, a series of unfortunate events happen that causes, of all things, a friendship between the two. They are both attracted to each other, but neither is in the position to cultivate a relationship. But then….

This is my first book by this author, but she has hooked me. The characters are real, and deal with real problems that anyone you know could be facing. It also hit a bit close to home as I am a person with depression and anxiety, so I may be able to empathize easier, but I think anyone could enjoy the love that flows from the pages.

So, here is my advice. Take a chance, get this book and fall in love with the characters and story just as I did. ~ Devlynn, 4.5 stars

4-4.5 stars. Dex Blakewell and Alexa Kennedy meet under less than ideal circumstances and have a poor first impression of each other, after all, their cars are now wrecked. Alexa is a medical student about to graduate and her every focus and bit of energy is focused on succeeding. She is consumed by working hard and diligently that she doesn't have the time or interest in a relationship. Not to mention that Alexa has her own personal issues that prevents her from letting other people in too close. Dex owns his own company and is not looking for a serious relationship ever again. He tried that in the past and it wound up leaving scars behind. After the initial unpleasantries, Dex and Alexa actually form a tentative friendship that is based on what real friendships should be made up of - natural comfort around the other, easy conversation and someone to enjoy spending time with.

I really liked that Dex and Alexa didn't have an instant bond or chemistry right off the bat and got to know each other first. Alexa has some deep insecurities that stem from her upbringing, so while she comes off as very intelligent and put together in her studies, her mind is a swirl of chaos and conflict. At the same time, she's got a good nature and sense of humor and is very amicable, but Alexa won't tolerate others trying to corner her. As for Dex, he's a hardworking businessman but not overly cocky or conceited. If anything, he's very direct and honest but reserved, too. Alexa's struggle is one that is real and scary, but not something people like Alexa are forthcoming about for various reasons. I loved how Dex didn't give up on her and had infinite patience once he understood what was going on because that's the best part of the story, caring about someone enough for them to care about themselves and to see they are worth their true value, no matter what the obstacles are along the way.

***** 5 Cranky Stars *****

Heartwarming with serious topics and a great style of writing.

Alexa Kennedy is at the top of her medical class. She is smart, beautiful, and kind person.

Underneath the surface, however, lies darkness. Body issues, self-loathing, she is bulimic, which stem from her father's ideas of perfection.

Rushing one night to the hospital to say goodbye to a patient, she crashes into Dex.

Dex: a successful business man who runs his own company, is commitment shy. The night Alexa crashes into his life, things begin to change.

Both have issues, big ones. What starts as friendship turns into something more.

I really enjoyed this. It's romance with grit.

Ms. Eugene handles the very tough subject of mental illness amazingly. I was breathless and had to put it down a few times because it felt like she was in my head.

Alexa is a 4th year med student. The heart break of being a doctor is touched on briefly as she finds out a child that she has been treating is dying. On her way to the hospital she has a car accident with a man she thinks is a complete jerk. Turns out that Dex is a hero even with his own issues. He doesn't do relationships. He and Alexa become best friends and that turns into an epic love story. The story isn't pretty at times. After all the subject of eating disorders, mental illness, and physical and mental abuse are throughout the story.

Will Dex be able to help Alexa, find her voice, find her sanity, will Alexa be able to find the help she needs to heal and see what she has to offer the world and see what Dex sees when he looks at her and not what she sees in the mirror.

If you are in the market for dark erotic romance - This one is should be at the top of your list. The characters are stunning, the plot line is fluid and keeps you involved, the subject is dark but dealt with as a reality not sensationalized. I laughed with them, I cried with them, I wanted to die with them and you will too! Want a book that makes you feel - this one will make you feel and make you think!

Nothing could have prepared my heart for what it was about to feel in this book! I laughed so hard my husband thought I was crazy and cried so hard my kids were seriously worried about me. There is so much to this story I don't even know where to begin! Alexa is a broken girl with a shattered past, and not just by her own doing. She has endured more in her life than one should ever have to, and she isn't done yet. Dex has lived through the most tragic of situations and has turned bitter and resentful because of it. These two souls have been made to heal each other and make each other feel again. I honestly cried at the end, not because of what I was reading, but because of what I was going to miss once I turned the next page. I fell in love with the hope and realness of these characters and cannot wait for you to read this book! You will completely fall in love and feel their personal struggles!

I really wasn't prepared for such a great read. The author takes the subject of mental illness and writes about it in a beautiful and sensitive way.

Alexa is a medical student. She's focused and works hard. However she's got secrets that is making daily life a struggle.

Dex is a rich sexy guy. He also works hard and has secrets.

When these twos worlds crash together they get more than they bargained for. Will their secrets keep them apart??

I truly loved this story. I found myself moaning at my kindle when the storyline didn't go the way I want and had goosebumps reading other parts of the story.

Well written standalone that I highly recommend. I'll definitely be reading more of this authors books.

I don't have much to say - except that this is the best book I've read since Puddle Jumping ! This was just phenomenal, Lisa Eugene sure knows how to write a damn good story.

"I couldn't touch her enough, couldn't kiss her enough, and I couldn't wrap my brain around my desperate need for her. There was an insanity in desiring someone so much."

The ending in this one was much better but I still didn’t feel connected enough to the characters, I didn’t feel invested. I even felt like Dex was a secondary character at times. But, the plot was good, just not good enough (つ .•́ _ʖ •̀.)つ
